Midwives
Midwives have helped women to deliver their babies for centuries.  With the rise of allopathic medicine, the use of health insurance, and the subsequent rise in hospital births, the midwife in the United States almost became a footnote in our medical history.  But as women have rejected the medical model of childbirth, the midwife has enjoyed a renaissance. 

While homebirth itself is legal in all 50 states, to atttend a birth in the capacity of a midwife is illegal in some states, and alegal in others.  A complete and updated table is available here
